The new multi-part documentary Elvis Presley: The Searcher, directed by Thom Zimny and airing on HBO on April 14, pushes past the larger-than-life image of The King of Rock and Roll, portraying him instead as a man and an artist “who wanted to heal, to find that thing that was always felt to be missing, and to do it through the music.”

This soundtrack features 18 songs as heard in the film including familiar hit recordings (“Heartbreak Hotel,” “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”), powerful vocal performances (“That’s All Right,” “Tomorrow Is a Long Time,” “Trouble/Guitar Man”) and rare outtakes (“Suspicious Minds,” “Separate Ways”).

Hannah ★★★★★

Wasn't sure a soundtrack could stand on its own without the documentary, but the sequencing here genuinely works as a listening experience. The alternate takes tucked in are a nice surprise, and the remastering makes the early Sun recordings sound warmer than my old copies.

The tracklist flows so well that I ended up listening straight through twice, and the liner notes add real context to the documentary. Sound quality on the remastered gospel cuts is warm without sounding cleaned up. Nice to finally have these performances collected in one place.

Robert Y. ★★★☆☆

The live versions on disc two are the real draw here, especially the '68 Comeback material. But a good chunk of disc one just repeats the same studio takes I already own, so it feels padded. Fine as a companion to the documentary, less essential on its own.
