Memphis  is a comprehensive collection that takes listeners through the many recordings Elvis had done while in Memphis - from his songs at SUN Records, to his American Studio and Stax sessions, through to his 1974 hometown show and finally, his last recordings in Graceland. This 5-CD collection of Elvis’ songs over the years features 111 tracks, 88 of which are newly mixed versions of the select recordings, pure and without overdubs.

The Stax sessions alone make this worth it, and hearing the SUN recordings alongside the American Studio stuff really shows how his sound changed over the years. Disc 2 has been on repeat in my car all week.

I've owned a few Memphis compilations over the years, but nothing that walks from the SUN recordings all the way through the American Studio and Stax sessions in one set. Hearing the same voice shift across those decades in one place is the whole reason I bought it.

The Stax sessions alone make this worth it — you can hear the room, the horns, everything just loose and live. I've had the SUN tracks for years on other comps, but hearing them sequenced next to the American Studio stuff shows how far he traveled without ever really leaving Memphis.
