What turned out to be Elvis Presley’s final Nashville session brought music that was originally overlooked. The original recordings found their way on the holiday themed Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas (1971), the gospel He Touched Me (1972), Elvis Now (1972) and Elvis (1973). Yet, to hear this music, a half century after it was recorded – now wiped of overdubs – reveals some of the most compelling singing of Presley’s career. There may not be a better set of tracks in his catalog that benefits more from un-dubbing the masters. No longer weighted down, Elvis shines. Available on 4 CD’s.

I've had the holiday tracks from these final Nashville sessions on repeat since this box set arrived, and hearing them spread across four discs instead of scattered on old compilations is a real treat. The stripped-back arrangements on the outtakes disc alone were worth it for me.

The sound quality on these 4 CDs is incredible — you can really hear the raw emotion from his last Nashville sessions. Even the holiday tracks feel fresh and unpolished in the best way.

The packaging on this 4 CD set is sturdier than I figured for a box this size, and the booklet actually gives context on why these final Nashville sessions got shelved. Hearing the holiday tracks stripped of the overdubs changed how I listen to them.
